Tigers Win SEC!

Posted: Updated:

Top-ranked and unbeaten LSU can begin preparation for the BCS title game after locking up the SEC title with an impressive second half against No. 12 Georgia.

Tyrann Mathieu returned a punt 62 yards for a touchdown to ignite the Tigers' rally in a 42-10 rout of the Bulldogs in the conference championship game. LSU trailed 10-0 in the second quarter and had yet to make a first down on its first seven possessions when Mathieu shifted the momentum with his scoring return. He also had a fumble recovery to set up a score before another return led to the Tigers' decisive touchdown.

The third-quarter belonged to LSU's Kenny Hilliard, who had TD runs 2:14 apart early in the second half before grabbing an eight-yard scoring strike from Jordan Jefferson to put the Tigers ahead 28-10. Hilliard finished with 72 yards on just eight carries. Alfred Blue ran eight times for 94 yards, including a 48-yard TD burst that made it 35-10. Morris Claiborne capped the scoring by returning an interception 45 yards.

The Tigers won easily despite a quiet game from Jordan Jefferson, who completed just five of 13 passes for 30 yards and generated just 25 yards of total offense. The outcome sets up a likely rematch between LSU and Alabama for the national championship. The Tigers beat the Crimson Tide 9-6 in overtime last month.
