PONCHATOULA, LA (WAFB) -

A man authorities said led them on a chase and even tried to run over some units was taken into custody after the car was stopped by spike strips Thursday morning.

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office reported Murray Jackson, 50, of Hammond fled after allegedly stealing from a store in Ponchatoula.

Deputies responded to a call from the Ponchatoula Police Department a little after 8 a.m. for assistance in catching a shoplifting suspect.

They said the suspect tried to run over police units and headed south on I-55. The TPSO took over the pursuit near the Manchac exit.

Officials said the St. John Parish Sheriff's Office and Louisiana State Police laid out spike strips to end the chase on I-55 at I-10.

Authorities reported Jackson resisted arrest and was sprayed with mace.

He was arrested and taken to the St. John Parish Prison. He will be booked as a fugitive from Tangipahoa Parish.

Investigators said Jackson will eventually be taken to the Tangipahoa Parish Jail and booked on several outstanding warrants from the TPSO and Hammond Police Department.

They also identified him as a fugitive from the Ponchatoula Police Department.

Additional charges could be filed.

Jackson is accused of stealing from a Dollar General Store.
